JOSIAH STRONG

"Whether or not the Constitution follows the flag, opportunity does."

Position:
I am for the annexation of the Phillipines for religious and sociological reasons. I believe that our "little brown brothers" need guidance from an enlightened nation such as the Unites States and would greatly benefit from our Protestant ideals. The people of the Phillipines are not prepared for a regime of home rule, and should we leave them to their own devices anarchy will surely insue. This would go against all religious ideals. Therefore, it is for both moral and practial reasons that I press for their annexation. Religious and moral conversion of the Filipinos would greatly benefit them, as well as the world as a whole. The Anglo- Saxon race seems to be given this opportunity for annexation by a higher being, and it is our divine mission to take it and make the most of it.
Occupation: Catholic (Protestant) Clergyman, Author, Social Reformer
Reasons for Interest on Topic:
I believe that Anglo Saxon Americans should unite under the religious and sociological reasons for movement into, and eventual annexation of the Phillipines. We, as Americans would give the gift of religious and civil liberty to the Filipinos upon annexation, which any freedom seeking country would enjoy. It is our mission, as the racially supreme, to combat selfishness and anarchy in other nations as well as in other individuals, whether in a peaceful way, or through force. People in the Latin American nations, as well as the nations of the world would ultimately benefit from being controlled by an enlightened nation such as ours. It is our diplomatic mission, our divine destiny, to annex the Phillipines into our great country.

Chrisitianity is an expansive religion, and the work of the missionary will only end when all the world has been saved. Therefore, the Phillipines are a nation of importance in our mission. Those at the top of the mountain should help those suffering at the bottom, which is what bringing religion to the Phillipines would be doing. Our "little brown brothers" need to be enlightened, and who better than us to do so?
